Here is another set of character designs from the Design-A-Character challenges. This one was all about profiles, teenage profiles to be exact!

I used Flash instead of the usual Illustrator. It's always good to try new things!

I'm a part of a group on DeviantArt called Design-A-Character. They put up really cool challenges every week to give your creative muscles a workout. The best part is you can submit to any of the previous challenges at any time!

This is from one of the earlier challenges, the Imagination Challenge. You find an object in your room and turn it into a character. I chose my Tamagotchi keychain...

And made a character!

This was entered in the Print Magazine cover contest a few years ago.

The theme was Design Culture Youth.

Pretty broad (and vague) subject! After a while, I came up with a solution: we're all in our own little bubble. We don't interact anymore. We've got all sorts of gadgets to keep us apart.

Herbert's Head - Character Sketches

These are the character sketches for my children's book Herbert's Head! It's about a boy who doesn't really fit in with his family. They all can do fantastic tricks and perform together in a show but Herbert can only help with little things. One day, he loses his head, literally, when his mom accidentally miscasts her magic. The family tries to get it back but fails... so Herbert makes one! He becomes an inventor and everyone's happy!

The Mumble Jungle: Concept

I've been thinking up a new story: the Mumble Jungle. Well, I've already thought it up. I just need to flesh it out. Cassie is a very shy girl. When she moves to a new town the thought of a new school with new people is just too scary to handle! So she stays home instead. While she's exploring her backyard she finds a path that leads to a strange place: the Mumble Jungle!

Here are the character designs for Cassie, and some background ideas:

You start with silhouettes to get a general idea of the outline and attitude of the character...

...and then go on to the final with expressions and actions. Not sure why it's so washed out.

An avatar for it as well. Also, I do what I call doodles over there but they're really just quick, silly drawings with outlines. If they're good enough they might show up here.

Chocolate: Women's Tech Catalog

The cover for Chocolate, a fictional women's tech catalog.
This was for February, the Valentine's Day edition.

The dots are binary! A filled dot is 1 and an unfilled dot is 0. The ones on the cover spell out love and the ones at the bottom of the pages are page numbers. Nobody would ever get that... but I thought it was cool! Maybe the catalog would have a "Figure out what the binary says!" section inside.

Since it's all techy, I also treated the text like code. The title is how a title would be written, the table of contents is written as if it were a program, stuff like that. It was a fun piece to work on!

Miss America: The Old, Old One

SCAD has another show: Misplaced, Displaced and Forgotten. I figured one of the first Miss Americas would be displaced, in an old folk's home, and forgotten, since after they give their crown to the next winner it's pretty much over for them.

I'm not sure about misplaced but we didn't have to cover all three of the words. As long as you get a general feel of the theme it's fine!
